Patsy Metheny Obituary

Patsy Faye Bowling Metheny was born December 7, 1937 on the homestead in Binger, Oklahoma.   She was the youngest of 6 children born to Leonard Bowling & Curfew Valentine Bowling.  Patsy was loved and doted upon by her family but most especially her older sister Alliene, who would take her on her dates with future husband Bud Farr.  Patsy was baptized in Binger Baptist Church and strived to live her life following the principles of Christ’s teachings.

Patsy started Binger Schools in 1944 which began her life-long love of learning. She graduated from Binger High school in 1956.  Patsy continued her formal education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University which she attended on a full academic scholarship. She graduated with honors in May 1960 with a Bachelor’s Degree in English Education.  In the spring of 1960 she met the love of her life, Byron Lee Metheny, at Ratcliffe’s bookstore on the SWOSU campus.  Patsy and Byron married December 16, 1960 at Binger Baptist Church. Two daughters were welcomed to the marriage, Brenda Len in 1961 and Christina Kaye in 1972.  In 2003 Patsy and Byron opened their home and hearts to Jared Martinez whom they considered an adoptive son. She also wanted to recognize her son=in=law Tony Wilkerson who always made her feel loved and appreciated in his home.

Patsy and Byron traveled extensively for Byron’s work, in 1963 they made their first move to Montgomery, AL and eventually living in Monroe, LA and Dublin, GA before returning to Binger in 1999.

Patsy taught Junior High and High School English for 47 years in 4 different states. Her open heart, kindness and mischievous sense of humor made her a favorite with her students.  She especially loved her students at Gracemont High School.  Patsy co-authored two books.  One about the Bowling genealogy that she wrote with her sister Alliene.  The second she wrote with niece Arlene Bordwine celebrating the centennial of Binger Baptist Church.

Patsy’s most treasured gifts in life were her two grandsons, John Byron Wilkerson and Matthew Troy Wilkerson to whom she read Shakespeare and Robert Frost as infants.  She loved watching anything her grandsons participated in especially the church Christmas program.

Patsy is proceeded in death by her beloved husband of 51 years Byron Lee Metheny; Her parents James Leonard Bowling and Curfew Azea Valentine Bowling; beloved brothers William Isom “Buster” Bowling and wife Irene; Allen “Poe” Bowling and wife Billie and infant brother Wesley Bowling.
