Zelma “Joy” Oakes, 90, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at River Oaks Rehabilitation Center in El Reno, Oklahoma. She was born on February 12, 1935, in Geary, Oklahoma, to Homer Lee and Mary Eethel (McDaniel) Reynolds.  Joy graduated from Hinton High School and later married Lonnie Oakes on March 30, 1961, in Del City, Oklahoma. They built a life together in Hinton, where they raised their two daughters, before eventually moving to Oklahoma City. Joy and Lonnie owned and operated a plastics company in Oklahoma City.  She had a love for bowling, dancing and traveling. In her earlier years, she enjoyed family reunions, bringing together her brother, sisters, nieces, and nephews. One of Joy’s greatest pleasures was spending time with and supporting her five grandsons. Joy will be remembered for her warmth, love of family, and the joy she brought to those around her.

Joy is survived by her daughters, Kim Wright and husband Ronnie of Hinton, Oklahoma, and Julie Brewer and husband Brooks of Edmond, Oklahoma; five grandsons, Seth Wright and wife Kelly of Hinton, Micah Wright of Hinton, Matthew Morrow and wife Jordan of Houston, Texas, Jonathan Matthews of Oklahoma City, and Dane Matthews of Oklahoma City; one great-granddaughter, Ruthie Joy, and another great-grandchild on the way. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Mary Eethel Reynolds; her husband, Lonnie Oakes; and her siblings, Jacky Baker, Ruth Keller, Leona Foster, Norma Duvall, Jewell Maib, and Mack Reynolds.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at the Hinton-Turner Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, Oklahoma, with Reverend Jimmy Wray Mead officiating, burial will follow at Hinton Cemetery in Hinton.
