Thompson Williams was born December 8, 1956 to Melford and Winona Williams in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. His Caddo name was Ha imay Iwi’ or Big Eagle. He was one of eight children. He adored his family. His parents instilled in him respect for all people, of all backgrounds, and to never hurt people.
Thompson graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma. He was a teacher and talented artist. Beginning at seven years old, Thompson met with elders three times a year at the dances to learn traditional ways, such as what prayers are said, and how to do ceremonies. When Thompson was twenty-two years old, he was always asked to do funerals. He recollected that he looked around and felt sadness that the older folks had forgotten. He made it his mission to teach the next generation how to do ceremonies and to do things in the proper way. During his time in Denver and at Four Winds, Thompson helped keep the Intertribal community strong. He spent his time helping anyone that needed it. He was particularly proud of the Fatherhood program that he led. He used the lessons his father gave him to encourage men in the community. Thompson was beloved in the art community and the Native community for his kindness and love of all.
Thompson’s greatest love was his family, Rhonda, AuNane, Kiamichi-tet, and Hay-Nah. He constantly bragged about his children. He always said they were his greatest gift. Thompson loved Halloween and the great fun of spooky tales and decorations. He had a great sense of humor and was a friend to all. He will be sorely missed for his wisdom, his story telling, and his friendship.
Thompson is survived by his ex-wife, Rhonda Williams, his daughter, AuNane, his sons, Kiamichi-tet and Hay-Nah. Thompson’s older brother, Wilford Williams, older sister, Delores Nestell, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, family, and friends who will remember him forever as he dances with the ancestors.
