Sharon LaRue Sontag, 83, of Geary, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, April 9, 2026. She was born on March 27, 1943, in Okeene, Oklahoma, to Vernon Lynn May and Florence LaRue (Barth) May.
Sharon spent part of her childhood overseas while her father served in the United States Air Force, living in Iran before returning to Oklahoma, where she was raised in Okeene. She built a life rooted in hard work, family, and simple joys. Early in her life, she worked as a maid and later became a familiar and friendly face at the North Store (Fastlane) in Geary. She also dedicated time working for the U.S. Census.
On November 21, 1962, Sharon married Alvin V. Sontag, in Woodward, Oklahoma.
Sharon found great happiness in the quiet, creative pursuits she loved. She was an avid seamstress and crocheter, and she took special pride in baking homemade bread. She enjoyed caring for her backyard fishpond and found companionship and comfort in her beloved dog, Gypsy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alvin; two sisters, Sandra Lee Jung and Cynthia Williams; one brother, Robert Lynn May; in-laws, E.A. and Delpha Sontag; and son-in-law, Joe Benson.
Sharon is survived by her sister, Nancy Ashcraft of Edmond, Oklahoma, her children, Kathy Benson of McAlester, Oklahoma, Tony Sontag and wife Valerie of O’Fallon, Illinois, Alan Sontag and wife Tammy of Elk City, Oklahoma, Kevin Sontag of Enid, Oklahoma and Chris Sontag and wife Danielle of Geary, Oklahoma. She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and three dear friends who she considered family: Carol Adamson, James Schumacher, and Susan Goodwin, all of Geary, Oklahoma.
A graveside memorial service will be announced by the family at a later date.
