Merl Sims Obituary

Merl D Sims was born May 20, 1928 to Lihu and Vera Sims in Hugo, Oklahoma. He went to be with the Lord on December 7, 2022 at his home in Binger, Oklahoma. Merl was brought to Binger by covered wagon before his first birthday. His parents were sharecroppers and cattle ranchers 5 miles southeast of Binger.

Merl married Iola Nadine Allison on April 14, 1945 in Anadarko, Oklahoma. They had 3 daughters: Reba Darlene, Carolyn Kay and Nelda Ann.  Merl helped on the family farm until his father retired in 1962 and moved into Binger township. Merl loved to hunt and fish. Merl worked as a farm and ranch hand, watch repairman, service station attendant and retired from Binger public school where he was a custodian and bus driver. Merl had many talents and interests such as: mechanics, welding, painting, carpentry, watch repair, plumbing, plowing, planting, dozing, fence building.  His biggest love was gardening and raising a variety of flowers. During his lifetime he was the caretaker of cows, horses, miniature ponies, pheasants, chickens, doves, pigeons, turkeys, ducks, peacocks and dogs. He loved laughing, telling the funny stories of his life, telling jokes and playing tricks on friends and family. He was known for dropping a rubber tarantula on visitors and scaring people with an aluminum pie pan in the shrubbery as they opened the gate. He also took pieces of tree branches, wrapped them in foil, froze them, and gave it to friends as log rolls at Christmas with instructions to let them thaw for a couple of hours before they opened them. In March of 2002, Merl married Ruth Young and later divorced, but maintained a friendship until her demise.

Merl was preceded in death by his parents, Lihu and Vera Sims, wife Nadine Sims and first cousin Beulah {Nabors} Brooks, who was raised in his home as his sister, by Lihu and Vera Sims.
