Melba Gene Arnold was born June 13, 1934, to Eugene Charles and Avis May (Tilley) Stas in Watonga, OK. She passed away Saturday, October 23, 2021, at the Bellevue Nursing Home in Oklahoma City, OK, at the age of 87.
At sixteen, Melba graduated Valedictorian of her graduating class in 1950 from Watonga High School. Immediately after graduation, she went to work for the Soil Conservation Service in Geary, Ok. She was united in marriage to Eugene Floyd Arnold June 7, 1953, at her parents’ home near Geary. They started out in Watonga while Melba continued working for the soil conservation. After living for a short time in Hinton, they moved to Stillwater where Gene attended college while Melba worked.
After Gene’s graduation, they moved to Sacramento, CA for a short time, moving to Oklahoma City in 1965. Their present home in Del City was purchased soon after returning to Oklahoma; it was location where the extended family gathered for many holidays up until the past few years.
Melba was a stay-at-home mom for many years where she served as PTA President and decorated cakes for weddings, birthdays and many different occasions. After her children attained a certain age, Melba re-joined the work force, employed at Tinker Air Force Base She and Gene enjoyed going to the lake for boating and skiing with the family.
In later life, she and Gene became involved in Bluegrass and traveled in Texas and Oklahoma with their favorite bands. She loved music and served as promoter, booked bands, made fliers for the Greater Oklahoma Bluegrass Society for many years composing, printed and mailed the monthly newsletter until just recently. She enjoyed bird and squirrel watching out the family room window, loved their community and loved having all their family home for the holidays.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Avis May Stas, husband, Eugene Floyd Arnold and an infant sister, Fannie Ellen.
Melba is survived by her four children, Craig Arnold and his wife, Karen, of Choctaw, OK; Lesli Clements and her husband, Donnie, of Del City, OK and Neil Arnold of Del City, OK, Teri Arnold of Sacramento, CA; five grandchildren, Troy Bradstreet Jr., Cassandra Dansby and her husband, Kevin, Amber Arnold and her fiancé, Calab Smith, Craig Arnold Jr. and Kira Sanchez; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Louis Stas and his wife, Barbara, of Wheeler, TX and Raymond Stas and his wife, Darla, of Bartlesville, OK; sister-in-law, Carolyn Bench, and her husband, Joe, of Calvin, OK; nieces and nephews, Alicia and Steve Gardella of Bartlesville, OK, Jeff and Sheila Stas of Spring, TX, Ronal and Juanita Stas of Sherman, TX, Cathi Gillette and the late Guy Gillette of Huntsville, TX, Jennifer and Greg Bryant of Oklahoma City, OK , Liz Jackson and husband, John, of Oklahoma City, Mark Bench of Newton, KS, and Tonya Bench of Tulsa, OK; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, many other relatives and friends.
