Mary Sweezy Obituary

Mary K. Sweezy was born July 1, 1929, to Angus and Josephine (North) Blindy west of Geary, OK.  Her Indian name was given to her “Bah Baad”.  She was a direct descendant of the Jabeen Family of the Sand Creek Massacre in Sand Creek, CO.  She passed away Friday, October 9, 2020 in El Reno, OK at the age of 91. Mary won Blue Ribbon 1st Place in the Baby Contest in 1931, at the Cheyenne Arapaho Fair at Ft. Reno, OK. She attended elementary school first through the third grade at Broadview Schools south of Carlton, OK.  Mary was baptized at a young age at the Canton Indian Mennonite Church.  She graduated from Concho Boarding Schools.  Mary and Sam Sweezy were married October 19, 1952 in Clinton, OK.  They moved to California where Sam worked, moved to Denver, CO, then to St. Louis, MO, and lived in Garland, TX for a while before moving back to the Greenfield area in 1969.  They later moved to Geary in 1971 and has lived there ever since.  She worked for a time at the Chisholm Restaurant, at Concho as a housekeeper for many years and in a donut shop in Geary.  She enjoyed sewing, loved listening to Native American Hymns and music as she drank her coffee and worked on crossword and word search puzzles, cooking, riding the back roads seeing her old home places, enjoyed telling stories of her travels as a young woman, and taking care of her kids and grandkids.  

      

   

Survivors Include:  Roderick Sweezy and wife Angela of Greenfield, OK, Julia Marie Svitak and husband Enos, Jr., of El Reno, OK, Barbara Sweezy of Geary, OK, Carol Sweezy of Shawnee, OK, Norma Sweezy Black and husband Phillip of El Reno, OK, Frank Sweezy and Eva Grace LeFlore of Geary, OK and Deborah Sweezy of Geary, OK, 19 grandchildren, and many great and great great grandchildren, 3 sisters, JoAnn Soap of Stillwell, OK, Carol Blindy of Geary, OK, and Anita Campbell of Geary, OK, and cousins, James H. North, Charlotte R. Pennington, Nancy Rhoads, Sandra K. Todd, David F. Mehaffy, Edna Mae Buffalomeat Sutton, and Margaret Heapofbirds.

 

 

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Angus and Josephine Blindy, husband, Sam Sweezy, daughter, Mary Jane Sweezy, 2 brothers, Leroy and James Blindy, and 3 sisters, Marie Rouse, Marjorie Tusing, and Stella Charley.

 

 

Mary’s family requests that everyone attending services wear a mask and practice social distancing.
