Mary Jo Brooks Southworth was born February 12, 1953, to Orvalle Ralph and Roberta Pearl (Keeney) Brooks in Watonga, OK. She passed away Thursday, November 10, 2022, in Oklahoma City, OK at the age of 69. Mary grew up in Watonga. She attended and graduated from Watonga High School in 1971. After graduation she went to work at Sequoyah Spinning Mill. She worked there and at the Watonga Public Library until the early 1980's when she went back to school to pursue her Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. After graduation she moved to the Yukon area where she spent most of the rest of her adulthood. She raised her son, Brooks, while teaching in a daycare and in public school setting, working for Hertz, and owning and operating a bakery called “The Cookie Cottage,” where she was known for the chocolate chip cookies. Mary loved to read and spent many hours visiting public libraries. She was a history buff, loved 1970’s music and old movies. Mary enjoyed cross-stitch. She wrote a column in the Watonga Republican for years. Mary was baptized in the Council Road Baptist Church in Oklahoma City and was a member of the Watonga Nazarene Church.
Mary is survived by her son, Brooks Southworth and fiancé April Brown of Yukon, OK, nieces and nephew, Jonna Bernhardt and husband Alan of Watonga, OK, Jodi Chalfant and husband Mike of Hinton, OK, Justin Fisher and wife Elisha of Hitchcock, OK and Indra Cowan and husband Travis of Watonga, OK; two brothers-in-law, John Fisher and Byron Bradford; 10 great nieces and nephews and 10 great-great nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Orvalle and Roberta Brooks, 2 sisters, Sharon Lee Fisher and Maurita Lynn Bradford and great-great nephew, Noah Blake Kennedy.
