Mark Daugherty Obituary

Mark McCord Daugherty was born August 28, 1952, to Dr. Rex Wilson and Barbara Naomi Hall Daugherty in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at PAM Health Specialty Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 74. Mark graduated from Pawhuska High School, where he played football and set a passing record that stood until just recently. Following high school, he attended the University of Tulsa, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Mark served his country in the United States Navy from 1972 to 1975 during the Vietnam War era. Mark married Nancy Perkins, and to this union two children were born, Josh and Rosemary. In 1984, Mark moved to Anadarko, Oklahoma, to work for Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, where he served as audiovisual supervisor and devoted 32 years to the cooperative. When he was first offered the position, Mark asked for a week to pray about whether he should accept the job, and the man offering him the position agreed that would be a good idea. During his years at Western Farmers, Mark became a valued journalist and photographer, helping tell the story of the cooperative and capturing many of the people, places, and moments that became part of its history. He regularly wrote for the cooperative and used his talents as a writer, photographer, and audiovisual professional throughout his career. His work, his gentle personality, and his genuine care for the people around him made him deeply loved and appreciated by his coworkers. After not having been on a date in 15 years, Mark asked Angela Brownen out. When she asked, “What about today?” Mark told her that he was playing the piano at church. The ladies at the church were very protective of Mark and were initially a little leery of Angela, wanting to make sure she was going to take good care of him. Apparently, she passed their test. Mark and Angela were married March 18, 1995, in Gracemont, Oklahoma. Throughout their marriage, Mark would tell Angela, “I love you more than anything in the world except Jesus.” Mark was a soft-spoken and gentle man with many talents, interests, and an incredible sense of humor.  He had a lifelong love for writing and especially enjoyed poetry. He could become emotional while explaining the meaning behind a poem and had a wonderful ability to illustrate a story and bring words to life. Music was also an important part of Mark’s life. He played the piano in church for more than 40 years and especially loved blues, jazz, and soul music. He was an avid collector of record albums and books and enjoyed boxing, football, and following his beloved University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Mark even enjoyed reading obituaries because he loved learning about people and the stories of their lives. Most importantly, Mark loved the Lord. Before his military service, Mark considered himself an atheist, but by the time he returned home, his life had changed and he had become a Christian. His faith in Jesus Christ became the foundation of his life, and he faithfully loved and served the Lord for many years. Mark was a former member of Grace Christian Fellowship Church in Anadarko. He will be remembered as a gentle,  thoughtful, and talented man who loved words, music, people, and his family, but above all, loved Jesus.

Mark is survived by his wife, Angela Daugherty of the home in Edmond; three children, Josh Daugherty and wife Anne of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Rosemary Daugherty of Tulsa, and Kirbi Mills and husband Blake of Edmond; grandchildren, Mel, Rori, and Lars Daugherty, and Channing Lane Mills; two sisters, Gail Smith of Mannford, Oklahoma, and Chris Cox and husband Mike of Vinita, OK; and several nieces and nephews who dearly loved their Uncle Mark.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Rex Wilson and Barbara Naomi Daugherty; one brother, Rex Wilson Daugherty Jr.; and one grandson, Paxton McCord Mills.
