Larry "Pat" Dunn Obituary

Larry Pat Dunn was born in Watonga, Oklahoma on August 13, 1936 during a week with some of the highest recorded temperatures in the state. He was born to Keith and Ruth Dunn and spent his formative years playing and working on the family farm in Greenfield. After graduating from high school in 1954, he attended Northern Oklahoma Junior College to play football. When he was returning for his second semester, he and his parents stopped at a diner and saw in the paper that a new GI Bill had passed. He went to enlist in the Army and then went to school to inform his football coach that he would not be returning. He spent time at Ft. Ord and Ft. Leonard Wood before being stationed in Weisbaden, Germany where he served as an MP. During that time, he was able to travel throughout Europe with his buddies and lived with a German family. After his discharge, he briefly attended the University of Arizona. While there, he was a bellhop at a hotel where the Hollywood stars such as John Wayne would stay when filming westerns. He then transferred to Southwestern State College to finish his education. It was there that he made lifelong friends and caught the eye of a Bulldog cheerleader from Weatherford, Carlyon Toles. While at Southwestern, he worked for the Mark Restaurant and John’s Bootery which began a lengthy career in the shoe business. Upon graduation, he got a job with Brown Shoe Company in St. Louis. He married Carlyon in 1963. They lived in Illinois, California, Missouri and Oklahoma during the early years of their marriage and welcomed two daughters during this time. They then moved to El Dorado Hills, California where Pat often said was the best place to live for their family. It was there that the 5D’s became complete with the birth of the only native Californian, Shannon. In 1978, Pat and Carlyon decided it was time to live closer to family, and they moved to Weatherford where they opened 5D Ranch Western Wear. Carlyon helped to manage the store while Pat continued to be involved in the shoe business with an up-and-coming athletic shoe brand by the name of Nike. He repped Nike for many years and was even awarded agency of the year. He enjoyed mentoring young people starting out in the business and kept in touch with them thru the years taking pride in seeing their careers rise. He finished his business career selling long-term care insurance for GE Capital where he was able to travel and golf. Because of his success there, he took incentive trips with his wife or daughters to Paris, Costa Rica and Jamaica. Pat spent years traveling the US and the world making many friends along the way. After the passing of Carlyon and his parents, he retired and returned home. Pat remarried Pam Sizemore in 2004 and they made their home in Weatherford. He returned to his farming roots and enjoyed these last several years raising Charolais cattle on the family farm. Pat lived life well and it was a well-lived life.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Keith and Ruth Dunn, wife Carlyon Dunn, brother, Johnnie Keith Dunn, and sister, Anita Joan Dunn.
