Katheriene May (Hedrick) Hanes Obituary

Katheriene May Hanes, 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at her home in Geary, Oklahoma. She was born on December 11, 1933, in California to Pete and Winnie (Pointer) Hedrick.  Katheriene graduated from Geary High School and went on to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, where she earned her master’s degree in education. Her teaching career began in Calumet, and she later moved to Geary, where she dedicated 25 years to teaching first grade. Katheriene’s love for education and leadership led her to serve as principal for five years. She then joined Southwestern Oklahoma State University as an advisor and monitor for student teachers, mentoring aspiring educators across the state.  Katheriene had a passion for gardening, cooking, reading, antique collecting, and traveling with Bernie. She cherished her family, especially her grandchildren, and never missed any of their events. Katheriene was a devoted member of the New Life Assembly of God Church and remained active in her faith and community.  On June 1, 1952, Katheriene married the love of her life, LaVern “Bernie” Hanes, in Geary, Oklahoma. Together, they shared a beautiful life and partnership, doing everything side by side. LaVern preceded her in death on September 3, 2023.  Katheriene will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched through her kindness, dedication, and love for learning.


Survivors include, her two children, Steve Hanes and wife Cindy and Pam Fertonani and husband Angelo all of Geary; grandchildren, Angie McDowell of Mustang, Traci Hanes of El Reno, Hayli Hanes of Yukon, Tyson Hanes of Geary, Hilari Caldwell of Tulsa, and Jeremy Barrett of Geary great grandchildren, Presley and Keller Caldwell, Meadow and Ivey Barrett, Kolton McDowell and wife Ashleigh, and Bayler and Hayven McDowell; great-great grandchildren, twins Sunny and Luna, and Baron Storm Stephen Crocker; as well as many nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.    

 

There will be a visitation Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at the Turner Funeral Home in Geary from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, 


A celebration of Katheriene’s life will be held at the Hanes family farm in Geary, Oklahoma, at a later date.  Cremation services entrusted to Turner Funeral Home, Hinton, Oklahoma.
