Hazel Mae Walker Carrick was born to James Earl and Jennie Belmont Oakley Walker on September 14, 1926 on the family farm east of Greenfield. She went home to be with the Lord on March 10, 2020. She was 93 years old.
She was the youngest of 6 children and only daughter. As a teenager, she worked hard doing chores on the family homestead, including getting up at 4:00 am every morning before school, braving all kinds of weather to round up the cows on horseback, then milk them. She graduated from Greenfield High School in 1944and attended Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater before taking a clerical job in the Blaine County Courthouse. On a chance meeting in Watonga, she met Robert Jacob (Bob) Carrick, a Geary letter carrier. They were married on Christmas Day, 1945, by Dr. Chesterfield Turner at the First Baptist Church in Geary. Hazel and Bob had 5 children and lived in Geary for the remainder of their lives.
Hazel was known for her strong Christian faith. Her extensive Biblical studies gave her an impressive knowledge and understanding of the scriptures, which she frequently quoted from memory. She loved to teach the Word of God and was a long-time Adult Sunday School Teacher and active member of the First Baptist Church in Geary. She held weekly prayer meetings in her home. Her Christian faith provided a source of comfort and strength to many.
Hazel was a devoted wife and self-sacrificing mother. In the early 1950s Bob and Hazel owned and operated the Carrick Hotel in Geary. Hazel managed the front desk and was the sole housekeeper, while also raising her young children. She later helped Bob renovate houses, run his Sporting Goods stores, and with his farming activities. Hazel was an experienced seamstress and worked as an alteration lady at Vaughn's Dry Goods in the 1960s. Also, in the 1960s Hazel was Chairperson for the County Democratic Party. In later years she changed her party affiliation to Republican. She was a long-time member of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron.
Everyone who met Hazel appreciated her gift for gab. She was a fun conversationalist and could make any story captivating with her vivid details and expressions. Her favorite subject, though, was the Biblical rapture and her deep conviction and hope that we are nearing Christ's second-comi ng.
Hazel had great recall and a sharp mind up until the time of her death. She sold Shaklee products and was a proponent of herbal supplements, rarely seeing a doctor until she was in her nineties. Then she was diagnosed with congestive heart, from a leaky valve, and osteoporosis.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and 5 brothers: Lawrence Lavern, Raymond Earl, and Harold Oakley Walker, an Infant Son, and Lloyd Keith Walker. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Marilyn Kay Carrick Matli, son-in-law, Dr. Mark Julius Matli, and grandchildren, Marcus Adam and Trevar Ryan Matli.
Hazel is survived by: her son, Carl Carrick and wife, Karin Jones Carrick of Geary, Oklahoma; daughter Carolyn Carrick Fox and husband, James Fox of Fairfax, Virginia; daughter, Roberta Carrick Brack and husband, David of Hinton, Oklahoma; and son, James Carrick of Carter, Oklahoma. Grandchildren: Norman Carrick; Tami Carrick: Marnie Fox Dawson and husband, Jeff; Jennifer Matli Wright and husband, Matt; Josh Brack and wife, Elizabeth; Deidra Brack James and husband, Jason; and Sabrina Carrick. Great-grandchi ldren': Elizabeth Wickliffe; Rylan, Rachel, Abby, and Anna Dawson; Olivia, Jake, and Claire Wright; Bethany, Isaac, Myra, and Josiah Brack; and Addy and Ella James. She also is survived by a host of nieces and nephews, along with a multitude of friends.
Hazel's enduring prayer for her children was based on Isaiah 54:13, "All my children are disciples taught of the Lord and great shall be their peace and undisturbed composure." Hazel was a good and faithful servant of the Lord. Her family and friends will dearly miss her spiritual guidance, her wisdom, and her loving presence on this earth.
