Grace was born on January 7, 1942, in Oakwood, Oklahoma, to Troys James “Frosty” and Ida Myrtle (Swagerty) Black. In her early years, Grace’s family moved frequently, following seasonal work harvesting beans and cotton. Grace was the second oldest of 13 children, despite the challenges of a mobile childhood, she developed a strong work ethic and a deep love for family that would define her life. In 1967, Grace made Greenfield her home, where she raised her family and became a beloved member of the community. She married Eli Lester “Les” Phillips, and together they raised four children. Grace worked diligently to support her family, spending two decades at the spinning mill in Watonga during the 1970s through the 1990s. She later worked as a cook at the local nursing home and at Hutch’s, where she was known for her hardworking spirit and kind demeanor. Later in life, Grace married Robie Wallace and continued to nurture her family and friends with love, faith, and generosity. She was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Greenfield, where she worshipped for many years. Grace always put her family first. She was known for her helpful and giving nature, always willing to lend a hand or offer support. An avid crocheter and a gifted crafter, she loved making blankets and sharing her creations with others. Grace’s warmth, strength, and selfless love will be remembered by all who knew her.
