Geneva G. East Barthel was born on December 29, 1932 in Huntsville, AR to Jim and Martha (Taylor) Cates. Geneva passed away on November 2, 2022 in Hydro, OK at the age of 89. She grew up in Arkansas and attended High School in Lookeba, OK. She married Daniel East on December 21, 1949 and he preceded her in death on January 3, 1987. They traveled with their 6 kids working at different farms where they picked beans, strawberries and peaches in Oregon, then back to Oklahoma to pick cotton and peanuts. Geneva was usually up before sunrise cooking for everyone and getting them ready to work. She was very protective of her children and was a tough woman who worked hard and loved her family. Over the years, she had many interests: cooking, woodworking, ceramics, and was an excellent marksman. She was often teased and called “Annie Oakley” because she could outshoot anyone. She would even stop while driving, go pheasant hunting and never missed when target shooting! Geneva later married Raymond Barthel on April 15, 1995. He preceded her death on December 2, 2010. She was a member of the Hinton Church of Christ. The older Geneva got, the sweeter she got and all those who loved her so much will miss her dearly.
Survivors include: her children: Loneta Levison and husband Robert of Lookeba, OK, Linda Casper and husband Don of Bogata, TX, Jimmy East and wife Sissy of Binger, OK, Calvin East and wife Peggy of Lookeba, OK, and Janie Lierle and husband Brad of Lookeba, OK; 19 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, and 20 great great grandchildren, as well as many other relatives and friends.
Geneva was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Martha Cates, her husband, Daniel East, her husband Raymond Barthel, her son, Carl East, her grandchildren, Joshua East, Donovan East, Deanna East, and Shawn East, and her sisters, Wilma and Naveda.
