Donald E McCumber

May 20, 1930 ~ September 18, 2021 (age 91)


Donald E. McCumber was born May 20, 1930 in Hinton, OK to Edd and Myrtle Francis (Walker) McCumber.  He passed away Saturday, September 18, 2021, in Oklahoma City, OK at the age of 91.  Don grew up in Hinton and graduated from Hinton  High School.  During his high school years he worked at the Ford garage doing body work and painting. From there he began his career in Airplane Mechanics at Wiley Post Airport, worked for the United States Postal Service for some time and then worked for the FAA for 33 years.  After his retirement he continued to do contract work for the FAA.  Don married Bertha "Bert" McCumber on January 29, 1949 in El Reno, OK.  The couple made their home in Hinton and then Del City.  They moved to the Yukon area while Don was employed by the FAA.  Upon Don's retirement the couple moved to Ft. Gibson Lake for a number of years and then back to Hinton in 1999.  Don was a handiman, delux.  He loved fixing nearly any piece of machinery or vehicle he could get his hand on.  He also was quite talented working with wood and building. He loved camping, fishing, boating and water skiing.  He was a member of the Hinton Kiwanis Club serving as the secretary.   Don was a member of the First Christian Church in Hinton.       


 Don was preceded in death by his parents, Edd and Myrtle McCumber, children, Jimmie Ray "J.R." Grigsby, and Donita McCumber, and brother Jim McCumber


Survivors include, wife, Bert McCumber of Oklahoma City, OK, 2 daughters, Frances "Fran" Rickey of Oklahoma City, OK and Sue Elkins-Battershell and husband John Battershell of Edmond, OK, 5 adopted children, 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren,  brother, Eldon McCumber and wife Donna Mae of Hinton, OK, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
