September 17, 1924 – March 25, 2024

Cleo Elizabeth Howard Courtney was born on September 17, 1924, to Paul Dennis Howard and Ida Leona Cox Howard in Hinton, OK. She passed peacefully at her assisted living facility, Sand and Sage of the Highlands, in Mustang, OK on Monday, March 25, 2024. As an infant, her father gave her the nickname of “Sweet”, but when her older brother, Dennis, tried to repeat his Dad, he pronounced it “Pete” and that is the name she has been known by her entire life.

Pete was proceeded in death by her husband, Ernest Odell “Butch” Courtney, infant daughter, Jacqueline Sue Courtney, infant great-granddaughter, Emily Hope Thomas, her parents, Paul Dennis Howard and Ida Leona Cox Howard, father and mother-in-law, Alonzo Courtney and Minnie Woods Courtney, sister, Meta Pearl Howard Fitzgerald, brothers, William Dennis Howard, infant brother, Billy Howard, daughter-in-law, Pamela Courtney, sister-in-law, Ellen Howard Taylor, sister and brother-in-law Ozella and Carl Moffet, brother and sister-in-law Paul and Betty Courtney, brothers-in-law Billy Courtney and Donald Courtney, sister and brother-in-law JoAnn Courtney Abbott Ross and Alva Abbott, brother-in-law Alvin Ross, sister-in-law Margie Courtney Folsom, niece, Katherine Ann Howard Hamby, nephew, Curtis Howard Fitzgerald, and infant nephew, Will Howard.

Pete is survived by three children and their families: Sharron Courtney Thomas of Mustang, OK, Douglas Courtney, of Katy, TX, and Melissa Courtney Jaques and husband, Vernon Jaques, of Mustang, OK; five grandchildren, Kerby Thomas of Mustang, OK, Amy Wood and husband, Melvin Wood of El Reno, OK; Mindy Seidel and husband Charles Rowland of Oklahoma City, OK; Marci Early and husband Kevin Early of Yukon, OK; and Ryan Jaques of Mustang, OK; twelve great-grandchildren, Lauren Thomas Ellington and husband, Travis Ellington, Jacob Thomas and fiancé Ashley Turner and Cameron Thomas, all of Fort Worth, TX, Samantha Walker and husband Christian Walker of Oklahoma City, OK, Cember Dorward of Tuttle, OK, Beau Early and wife, Sara Fleharty of Mustang, OK, Kaitlyn Robinson of Tuttle, OK, Rhett Early and wife Cassie Early of Tuttle, OK, Treyle Jaques and fiancé Simon Gauthier of Union City, OK, Talynn Jaques of Mustang, OK, Summer Seidel, of Oklahoma City, OK, and Kennon Jaques of Yukon, OK; 11 great-great grandchildren, two more great-great granddaughters due this summer: brother-in-law Albert Courtney and wife Chris Courtney of Norman, OK, sister-in-law Carol Courtney of Kingston, OK, brother-in-law Rev Wendel Folsom of Cordell, OK; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and family.

Pete was born in Hinton, OK and she and Butch raised their three children in Hinton. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She worked for LTV, in Yukon, OK, Kathryn Lipes Dress Salon in Oklahoma City, OK and Hinton Construction in Hinton, OK. Pete was the oldest member and holds the longest membership of First Baptist Church, Hinton, OK and was an active member of her Sunday School class, Vota Vita while she was able. She and Butch were devoted Christians and involved members of their church and community. Pete was a member of the Gilbert-Fossett American Legion Post #230 Auxiliary and Red Hats Club. She and Butch were enthusiastic Comet fans and were recognized as Comet Boosters of the Year in 2007. The couple loved bowling and Pete won Senior Female Bowler of Caddo County five times from 2004-2009. She also cheered for the Oklahoma Sooners, Thunder Basketball, and whatever team or activity her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were involved in and attended most of their games and events. Pete loved gardening, decorating, playing cards and considered shopping a competitive sport. Everyone that knew Pete knew her to have boundless energy for anything she cared about, was a fierce competitor, and loved to laugh and play whatever her age.
